Question Cupcake Glitters

Hi everyone!

I'm new to the forum and was looking for some tips/advice...

My first query is whether anyone can clear up my confusion around how "edible" glitters actually are. Some sites warn you that their glitter isn't safe to eat and you must remove it before you eat the cake (what a waste?!), some say they that are legally not to advertise them as edible, but are actually fine to eat and lastly, others say they are completely edible and to be wary of the ones that claim to be edible. I'm soooo confused! Can anyone recommend any brand/suppliers?

And secondly, what techniques are there for using glitters? I initially thought you mixed it in with your frosting, then piped it onto your cupcake, but most sites seem to tell me to sprinkle it on top? I like the idea of having buttercream that is completely shimmery. Again, can anyone recommend any products?

Thanks in advance everyone

Suzanne x

Question Don't worry about it

I've eaten cupcake glitter of unknown provenance and edibility standards adorning the tops of cupcakes ordered from a local startup cupcakery business in my area (see my review elsewhere on the site).
I am happy to report that I am still living and that the glitter simply passes through your system...

I believe I saw that you can make edible "glitter" with sugar and food coloring?!

Above is a link to check out. Obviously you wouldn't use the salt version

Hi Suzanne, you're right that there's been a lot of uncertainty about edible or non-toxic glitters, but I think the situation's a lot clearer now...

I personally don't get excited about it, but in the UK if you're making cakes for others in a business context then you have to follow the rules...

There's a really good description of the whole glittergate issue on Pretty Witty Cakes' website here: http://www.prettywittycakes.co.uk/bl...an-i-use-cakes

They even link to each type of glitter - edible, etc - so you can buy there and then and be totally safe

Hope that helps!
